Local media should feel useful before it feels impressive.

The strongest local publication earns attention by helping readers understand and enjoy where they live.

A local publication can be beautifully designed and still fail its readers. It can win attention for a moment and never become part of anyone’s routine. The difference between decoration and real local media is usefulness.

Useful does not mean dull. It means the publication helps people know what is happening, discover something nearby, understand an issue, support a business, or feel more connected to the place they call home.

Begin with the reader’s week.

The best question is not, “What do we want to publish?” It is, “What would make this reader’s week better?” That may be a clear explanation of a local decision, a short list of events, a profile of someone doing meaningful work, a trusted recommendation, or a story that reminds people why the region is worth caring about.
